Terms of Service

The legal terms that govern your use of UAN World — accounts, content licences, AI disclosures, disclaimers, liability, and dispute resolution. Plain language wherever the law lets us; precise language where it does not.

"You retain ownership of what you submit. We do not license it for AI training. Our editorial work is ours; we publish it under terms designed to be fair to readers and to contributors."

01

Acceptance of These Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and Unfiltered Africa Network ("UAN," "UAN World," "we," "us," "our") governing your access to and use of the UAN World website at uanworld.com, our newsletters, our mobile and partner distribution surfaces, and any other product or service that links to these Terms (collectively, the "Service").

By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

If you use the Service on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organisation to these Terms, and "you" refers to both you and that organisation.

02

Who Can Use UAN World

The Service is intended for users aged 18 and over, or for users who are at least the age of digital consent in their jurisdiction with verifiable parental or guardian consent.

The UAN Kids lane is offered under additional, stricter rules described within that lane. Adults using account-based features on behalf of a child do so under our Kids privacy supplement.

You may not use the Service if you are barred from doing so under applicable law, including sanctions and export-control regimes that apply to you or to UAN.

03

Your Account

Some features require an account. You agree to provide accurate information, to keep your credentials confidential, and to notify us promptly of any unauthorised access to your account. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account, except to the extent that activity is the result of our failure to provide reasonable security.

You may delete your account at any time through your settings or by writing to . Deletion does not remove material we are required to retain for accountability, legal-hold, or anti-fraud purposes (see our Privacy Policy).

04

Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to:

  • Violate any law, regulation, or third-party right.
  • Post defamatory, harassing, threatening, hateful, or unlawfully discriminatory content; incite violence; or publish content that sexually exploits or endangers a minor.
  • Submit content you know to be false, misleading, fraudulent, or designed to deceive the editorial process.
  • Impersonate any person, misrepresent your affiliation, or attempt to obscure provenance of submitted material.
  • Upload malware, attempt unauthorised access, probe for vulnerabilities, bypass rate limits, or interfere with the Service's operation.
  • Scrape, harvest, mirror, or use automated means to collect content or user data at scale without our written permission.
  • Use the Service or any UAN content to train machine-learning or AI models without an express written licence from UAN.
  • Resell, sublicense, or syndicate UAN content for commercial purposes outside the licence we grant in Section 07.

We may investigate suspected violations, remove content, suspend or terminate accounts, and refer matters to law enforcement where warranted. We reserve all available legal remedies.

05

User-Submitted Content and Licence

Content you submit — comments, tips, contributor pieces, media, corrections requests, and other material — remains your property. You grant UAN the following licence, tailored to the editorial mission of an independent press organisation.

  • Scope. A non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt for format, translate, distribute, publish, and display the content on the Service and across UAN's distribution surfaces (web, newsletter, video, audio, social, Telegram, syndication partners).
  • Duration. For the term necessary to operate, archive, and account for the Service. For published editorial content, the licence is perpetual for the purposes of operating, accessing, and retaining the published archive.
  • Moral and attribution rights. Preserved. Where you choose to be credited and where we publish your work, we credit you in line with our Editorial Standards.
  • What we will not do. Sell your content as a discrete product to third parties; license your content for AI training to third parties; use anonymous tip-line submissions outside our Source Protection Statement.
  • Representations. You represent and warrant that you own or are licensed to grant this licence, that the content does not infringe any third-party rights, and that it complies with Section 04.
  • Contributor agreements override. If you have a signed contributor or commissioning agreement with UAN, the terms of that agreement prevail over this Section for that work.

We do not screen all user-submitted content before publication. The fact that we publish comments or community contributions does not imply endorsement.

06

AI-Assisted and AI-Generated Content

UAN is an AI-powered editorial platform. We use AI extensively in our pipeline; we are transparent about how, and we accept editorial responsibility for what we publish.

  • Human accountability. Every published story is reviewed and approved by a human editor. AI does not publish autonomously.
  • Disclosure. AI-generated imagery and AI-generated voice or audio are labelled. SME voices are clearly identified as AI personas under human-defined editorial direction.
  • Your submission does not become training data. Content you submit through standard channels is not licensed to us for AI model training, and we contractually prohibit our AI vendors from training their general models on our editorial content or your submissions.
  • Errors. AI-assisted content is held to the same accuracy standard as any other editorial output. AI-related errors are corrected under our Corrections Policy.

For more, see our Editorial Standards (Section 08).

07

Our Content and Intellectual Property

All content published by UAN (text, imagery, audio, video, design, code, brand, and structured data), except for user-submitted content and content marked under an open licence, is owned by UAN or licensed to us. The UAN World marks, logos, and identifiers are our trademarks.

You may, for personal, non-commercial use:

  • Read, view, listen to, and share our content with proper attribution and a link back.
  • Quote brief excerpts where doing so is consistent with fair use / fair dealing under applicable law.

You may not, without a separate licence from UAN:

  • Republish UAN content in full on third-party sites, newsletters, or apps.
  • Use UAN content for commercial syndication, training of AI models, derivative analytics products, or competitive newsfeeds.
  • Remove or obscure attribution, watermarks, or rights notices.

Where we offer content under Creative Commons or another open licence, the terms of that licence prevail for that work. Syndication, research, and educational-use enquiries: .

09

Subscriptions, Payments, and Refunds

If you purchase a paid subscription or other paid product, additional commercial terms apply and will be presented at point of purchase. Unless otherwise stated:

  • Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. You may cancel at any time effective at the end of the current billing cycle.
  • Fees are non-refundable except where required by law or where we expressly say otherwise. Pro-rata refunds may be issued at our discretion for material service failures attributable to us.
  • Taxes and FX charges are your responsibility unless we have collected them at point of sale.
  • We may change pricing on prospective notice; current subscribers continue at their existing rate for the remainder of the billed cycle.

  • These limits apply whether the claim is in contract, tort (including negligence), statute, or otherwise, and whether or not UAN was advised of the possibility of such damages.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability; the limits in this Section apply only to the extent permitted. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be excluded by applicable law.

12
