Dr.
William Tan
Neuroscientist, Paralympian, Ultramarathoner and Veteran Fundraiser
Driven
by his philosophy that winning medals should not be an end to itself,
but "a means to further goodness and to help people", Dr William
Tan, a neuroscientist, has to date helped raised more than $12 million
for various charitable organizations, locally and internationally through
wheelchair ultramarathons.
Notwithstanding
his disability that confines him to a wheelchair, the Fulbright Scholar
has shown outstanding strength and perseverance in overcoming adversities,
winning for himself international recognition and local applaud through
numerous awards for his significant contributions in humanitarian and
community service.
In
1995, Dr Tan received the Singapore Youth Award, the highest national
youth honour in Singapore. He also received the Outstanding Young Persons
of Singapore Award the following year.
His
tremendous determination and fighting spirit continues to serve as a constant
source of inspiration not only to the disabled, but also to the community
at large.
